If you're in need of a refresher, this is Nemo waking up his dad Marlin for his first day of school. Unfortunately, yesterday I was Marlin, and my alarm clock was Nemo.
As always, however, my first day back in school turned out lovely. I have 48 brand new students and a revised syllabus to attempt to make Freshman Comp a little better than, "Describe your dorm room in 3,000 words." One reason it turned out so well is that I put more emphasis on meeting my students than I did the ins and outs of every classroom rule, procedure, and expectation (sorry, Dr. Wong). That's going to happen tomorrow!
As my students entered the classroom, I had them fill out index cards (details in the Prezi). I collected the cards once they were complete, and then spent time meeting each student and asking about personal interests. I got a little caught up in their willingness to share, and before I knew it, I had to hurriedly pass out the syllabus and hit the high points.
Fortunately, I created a buffer in my course calendar in case this happened. We have time on Friday to review the syllabus, discuss the writing process, and get in a "2nd day quiz."
Overall, I had a successful first day!
