Chicago, Pizza, and Sneakers: Why is this so novel?

“It was mostly to connect with my students and allow for them to get to know me and to build a bond with me before we even met.”
-Dwayne Reed,
qtd. in the Washington Post
Props, Mr. Reed!
According to an article in the Washington Post, Dwayne just started his semester student teaching 4th graders. This video was created "instead of a 'welcome back' letter." Brilliant, right?!
It is a really well done video and creative idea, but why is it that things that are this good so hard to come by in education? Sure, a 4th grade teacher next year may play this on the first day, but it's just not the same.
I don't really have an answer, but things like this give me the inspiration to start making this the norm. No, I'm certainly not going to rap, and I'll probably never go viral, but I can at least put as much effort as I can into my profession as I can.
Props, Mr. Reed.
